She Dialed 911. The Cop Who Came to Help Raped Her | The Daily Beast

This is the kind of stuff people are talking about when they refer to cops as “Racist, sexist pigs.” Not only did this pig feel he had the power to rape this woman in her own home, but all of the other police immediately came to his defense against her.

The fact of the matter is that the police — as an institution — inhabit an irreconilably antagonistic position in relation to the mass of working-class society. They serve the ruling class, the ruling order, and the status quo … not the people.

The nineteenth century philsopher and revolutionary, Frederick Engels, captures the nature of the police perfectly in his pioneering work, The Origin of the Family, Private Property, and the State.

He writes: ” … to keep the citizens in check, a police was force was needed. This force exists in every state; it consists nto merely of armed men but also of material appendages, prisons and coercive institutions of all kinds…. In possession of the public power, state officials now present themselves as organs of society standing above society. Representatives of a power which estranges them from society, they have to be given prestige by means of special degrees [badges] which invest them them with a peculiar sanctity and inviolability. The lowest police officer of the civilized state has more ‘authority’ than all the organs of gentile [pre-class, tribal] society put together.”

Therefore, whereas in class society, the state — including the police, the prisons, and the politicians — does not represent all of society, but merely its most economically dominant subgroup (i.e., the ruling class), these state officials, such as the cops, must present themselves, and be presented as, a force standing above and outside of society. Inevitably, this anoints the police with a sort of semi-divine right to do whatsoever they please without question, both within their own eyes and within those of society at large.

Until classes are abolished — and the state apparatus with it — it is unfortunately inevitable that the police will invariably act with virtual impunity in the most brutish, authoritarian, and horrid ways towards the general population; for it is precisely this population that the police are meant to feel they have power and control over.

A young woman in Milwaukee called the cops when someone threw a brick through her window. One of the cops who came to help raped her.

… She now stood on a floor littered with broken glass and pointed to the brick. The cop she had summoned to protect her instead chose this moment to grab the back of her head by her hair and sodomize her. Then he raped her.

Her revulsion in the aftermath was so visceral that she vomited as she ran outside. Other cops began arriving and saw a woman screaming incoherently about being raped.

Cates appeared and grabbed her by the waist, spinning her around. She was handcuffed and taken in, told at the stationhouse that she was being charged with assaulting a police officer.

She became more coherent but no less outraged and vocal as she continued cry out from a holding cell that she had been raped. She also continued to vomit. The other cops dismissed her as a liar.

… She took her story to the Milwaukee District Attorney’s office. A prosecutor subsequently wrote, “While I did find the victim’s version of events credible, I did not believe that her testimony would be strong enough to successfully prosecute Officer Cates.”

In other words, Cates was still a cop and she was still an inner-city teenage single mom. She stopped going to school as she fell into a deep depression, making two serious suicide attempts.
